Renovating Mary Montrose

When Sarah & Jess first started the journey of Mary Eats Cake together in Brunswick, they weren't sure what it would bring. They were just two young women, full of energy, drive, and passion and excited to start a High Tea venue of celebration for special moments in women's lives.

The Brunswick venue, a little two storey building, on thriving Sydney Road grew to be loved by the community for its gritty glam facade and fast paced bridal shower, baby shower, and birthday functions.

Sarah & Jess both grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne and wanted to rekindle their love for the area and community by bringing scones and tea back home.

They drove around the area one Saturday afternoon and on their way to the Yarra Valley they stumbled across a cottage country house at the foot of Mount Dandenong that drew them in. It had charm and potential.

The house was originally the family home of Ina. She lived in this very home 70 years ago and is full of joy and memories of the space. She showed us the room below that used to be her Dining Room where she had parties with her friends and family.

In 1979 the local council purchased the property with a vision to "provide a space to bring women together to learn crafts and socialise". It was called Japara House after an aboriginal leader who was instrumental in bringing tribes together.

It then became a kindergarten and playgroup centre.

Soon after Sarah & Jess met the landlords and agents they got to work to secure this quaint building - Mary Montrose.

The renovations began in November and was all consuming for the next three months.

The transformations were arduous yet rewarding.

The ladies then dropped their chisels and paint brushes and picked up their champagne glasses to celebrate the end of renovations and the beginning of Mary Montrose with their close family, friends, and industry partners.
